Re: Bubbles Quickguide site is returning a 404.
Hi James,
Thanks for the notice! We'll fix it for the next release.
But I'm a bit puzzled. The link to our website-quickguide was wrong, yes, but that online version is only fetched if the profiler can't locate the local help file. And it should always be able to locate that, unless there's a bug/problem in the installation or it has been tampered with afterwards. I've just tested an installation myself and it worked fine. Could I ask you to check two things:
That this registry-key exists: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\EQATEC\Profiler\InstallDir
And that the path is defines has the help-file "Help\quickguide.htm" under it
(The InstallDir is usually "C:\Program Files\EQATEC\EQATECProfiler"
So the local help file should be "C:\Program Files\EQATEC\EQATECProfiler\Help\quickguide.htm")
thanks,
Richard

Re: Bubbles Quickguide site is returning a 404.
Hey Richard,
HKCU/Software/EQATEC is there, but not HKLM/Software/EQATEC, however, the entry under HKCU doesn't have an "InstallDir" entry.
Also, the local help file is there, but I'm running Vista 64-bit. So the path is:
"C:\Program Files (x86)\EQATEC\EQATECProfiler\Help\quickguide.htm"
You could consider using relative path from your working directory as another fallback--just a thought--I guess getting the registry entry there is the bigger problem.
Not sure why the regitry entry didn't make it. Ah, nothing like having your bits run in the wild is there?

Re: Bubbles Quickguide site is returning a 404.
Hi James,
Hmm, maybe it's an "install for all/only for me"-related issue that we haven't tested properly? I'll take a look at it on a fresh Vista-image later. We did change from HKLM to HKCU for the runtime-settings at some point, exactly because of Vista-issues, so maybe there's a few loose ends there. So thanks for your feedback.
And you're absolutely right - it's always interesting to have your code out in the wild

Re: Bubbles Quickguide site is returning a 404.
Hi James,
I've looked at it and it's not immediately obvious what's going wrong.
I've installed the profiler from fresh on a vanilla Vista Business image several times:
1) As administrator, for Everyone
2) As Administrator, for Just me
3) As a regular user, same two variations
When installing as a regular user I got the UAC-prompt, asking for administrator credentials to elevate my priviledges. The installation could not go on if I didn't provide this info.
In all four cases did the InstallDir-entry end up under HKLM\Software\EQATEC as expected.
So I'm left wondering what exactly is happening on your machine, since you ended up without that key. It shouldn't be possible to install without having administrative priviledges, and in that case you should be allowed to write to HKLM. How did you install it? As what kind of user?
One question: has this key been written instead:
HKEY_USERS\_Classes\VirtualStore\Machine\Software\EQATEC\InstallDir?
If so then apparently some registry virtualization is going on. It's pretty unexpected, though, if the installation is run under administrative priviledges.
(Bottom line is anyway that a better strategy for finding the help would be a good idea
)
regards,
Richard
